SAILING IN KEFALONIA

AN IONIAN ISLAND GEM FOR YOUR YACHT CHARTER

As the largest of the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia is closest to Ithaca. Scenic and impressive with a rugged landscape that gives way to lush green valleys, stunning beaches, and plenty of bays and inlets, it’s perfect for your next yacht charter.

The beaches are all but deserted, the mountains brimming with the delightful scent of pine, and the quaint fishing villages all add to the distinctive charm of this island. Make it more adventurous or revel in the relative peace of this beautiful place. Explore the traditional villages, archaeological sites, Venetian castles, churches, and the capital as you like.

Most of the towns and villages of Kefalonia were destroyed by a massive earthquake in 1953 which took with it the most important pieces of architectural significance, except for Fiskardo. Somehow it survived unscathed, and now you can enjoy this picturesque harbor with fishing boats and Venetian-style homes from your yacht.

Fiskardo is undeniably the most beautiful village on the island. You’ll find it at the northeastern tip. It’s also the only settlement that has retained its 18th-century architecture. Cypress glades densely back the area and shelter the bay making this a popular places for sailors. Mooring up yachts here is easy and spectacular. Plus, the houses around the harbor are now home to upscale seafood restaurants and cafés while some remain as holiday homes.

Just 6.2 miles (10 km) from Fiskardo on the northwest coast sits the peaceful village of Ássos. It resides on a causeway that joins a hilly peninsula with the mainland. You can access it by driving down tiny roads to the quaint harbor where the town can be found. Seafood taverns full of delights greet you here. The peninsula also features the ruins of a 16th-century Venetian castle. Walk up for a closer look or visit the pebble beaches close by, perfect for taking a swim.

When to visit Kefalonia

BEST TIME TO VISIT KEFALONIA

The warm climate of high temperatures and plentiful sunshine year-round make Kefalonia an excellent yacht charter destination. Temperatures average at 26°C, though it cools slightly in winter. Still, it’s mild with sunny days and very few rain showers.

Around the time of Easter is usually best though there may be some April showers. The sun then makes its debut, creating the ideal sailing situation. For lovers of swimming and sun, go between July and August. It’s the busiest time, and the temperatures climb to 30°C. The water is lovely though, and the chance of rain is slim. With all the other tourists though, accommodations can be scarce, so be sure to book in advance and prepare for higher costs. Or sail in on your yacht charter for the day and then sail away after your visit.

May, June, September, and October are when prices tend to be lower for accommodations. The weather is as perfect as can be and the crowds are thinner. Warmer seas in May and the bloom of flowers across the island make it the kind of paradise Homer wrote of. Locals though always say September is the best time for a visit to Kefalonia because everything is open, the weather is hot without being overbearing, and the island is at its most beautiful.
