AUSTRALIA AND THE FAR EAST
SAIL DOWN UNDER IN AUSTRALASIA AND THE FAR EAST

In the Indian Ocean surrounding Australia and the Far East Asian countries known as Australasia, there are thousands of absolutely stunning tropical islands with pristine sailing waters ideal for a yacht charter. The waters breed incomparable diversity along with islands that feature fascinating cultures and landscapes that will truly take your breath away.

From the Great Barrier reef that stretches up half the length of the entire continent of Australia to fjords that rival the ones found in Norway and the dazzling sights of one of Australia’s best cities, Sydney, a sail aboard a yacht charter here is an unrivaled choice for an adventurous vacation with all the opulent trimmings one could hope for.

To focus on just Australia though would be a shame, although it will surely be your top yacht charter destination in the Australasia area. Nearby New Zealand boasts some of the most splendid sceneries on the planet, where famed movies have taken place. Auckland, the City of Sails and its Bay of Islands, is another fine stop aboard your yacht charter for a refined city full of wining and dining. Don’t miss the French-influenced Spice Islands with a pinch of the Far East sprinkled in and you will have one of the most tempting sailing itineraries, one that you simply cannot get aboard a large cruise line.

From Antarctica to Thailand, sailing yachts crisscross the oceans that separate the lands and include some of the most engaging cruising destinations in the world. Naturally, Australia and New Zealand lead the charge as both countries are home to large yachting communities and both have won the coveted America’s Cup. Each of these destinations will put the wind back in your sails with discoveries of natural wonders. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is indeed one such place where snorkeling and diving should not be missed from your yacht charter.

In the summer months in both the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, tropical storms can cause quite a bit of upset, but because both New Zealand and the subtropical portions of Australia lie south of the cyclone belt, you can safely cruise year-round in these parts.

Yachting has made great strides in the North Indian Ocean in recent years with well-endowed centers along the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, from Phuket in Thailand down to Singapore. One area that is rapidly catching up is the United Arab Emirates, where man-made harbors, beaches, and even entire islands are being created from scratch.

In the North Indian Ocean, the weather is dominated by the northeast monsoons of winter and spring, and to the southwest, the monsoon season is in summer and autumn. In the northeast though, the weather conditions are quite benign and ideal for yachts to pass from Southeast Asia all the way to the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.

South of the equator, the island groups, scattered across the South Indian Ocean make convenient stepping stones from the South Pacific to South Africa. The best sailing conditions are from June to October, with steady southeast trade winds. Mauritius, Madagascar, and Réunion are the most popular sailing destinations here, ideal for your next yacht charter. The tropical storm season lasts from late November to early April and affects all tropical areas with the notable exceptions of the Seychelles and Chagos.
