BEST TIME TO VISIT ALGARVE

There is no bad time to visit the Algarve. It’s an ideal year-round sailing destination. The spring and summer months tend to be long, and the winter here is mild and short. Known as the best climate region in Portugal, you’ll find pleasant weather waiting for you. In the northern portions of the country, the temperatures can dip down into the negatives with snow piling up, but in the Algarve, you’ll find the warming sun to be pure bliss aboard your yacht charter. Additionally, if you’re looking to trim costs on your vacation budget, winter has cheaper accommodations as it’s considered the off-season from December 21st through March 19th.

Visit in summer, from June 21st through September 21st, and you’ll be in peak season. It’s the marvelous time for a yacht charter to the Algarve, but it’s also the most crowded. You’ll find the golden sands of the glorious beaches packed with other vacationers. Meanwhile spring and autumn are both the beginning and end, respectively, of the bathing season, where the weather is warm enough to enjoy the beaches still and the other engaging opportunities the Algarve presents.

Avid golfers will be pleased to know that the golf courses are open all year, so it depends on your preference when you’d like to charter your yacht to the Algarve. Beaches are enjoyable at any time, and most are lined with seaside restaurants that will delight the senses while you dip your toes in the white sands and watch the beautiful blue waters twinkle around you.

GETTING TO ALGARVE

Getting to Algarve

You can easily get to the Algarve from anywhere in Europe. Thanks to the well-planned network of new roads, you can drive through some of the most picturesque places in southern Portugal. Except for major holidays, the traffic is usually smooth-flowing and easy-going.

The A22, which also goes by the Via Infante Sagres, Spain, is nearby Lagos. The roads here branch off to a variety of beaches, coastal towns and charming villages in the inland areas. By and large, air travel is the fastest and most comfortable way to get to the sunny land of Algarve. The airport here, Faro Airport (FAO), is merely 3 hours away from most major European destinations.

You can also rent a private jet and enjoy the freedom of choice, total comfort and flexible terms for your travel.

Always bear in mind that the airline industry is a fluid one and the services detailed here may change, sometimes from month to month. Please do not rely solely on this information for your travel plans. To keep an eye out for any new flights and to search for excellent flight deals, a website such as Tripadvisor can be a handy resource.

Another option is to travel via train. Portugal is part of Europe’s rail network and is accessible from most capitals in Europe. You can, of course, reach the Algarve through the ports and marinas you’ll find spanning the south coast of Portugal. Getting there is what makes it the most fun, be it by plane, train, bus, car, or your yacht charter!

WHERE TO STAY IN ALGARVE

Where to Stay Algarve

Your yacht charter is always lovely, but jumping onto dry land for a stay in a resort in the Algarve is also sublime. Luxury hotels are the top choice. They are exclusive, and the level of service is unparalleled. Luxury villas are another opulent option. They often allow you to rent them for more extended periods from a week to well-beyond. The villas are a better match for a larger group, or if you want more space on your romantic sailing adventure.

There are also state-run hotels called Pousadas. They can be found in desirable locations and have highly competent service as well as comfort. Like the luxurious accommodations, these too offer stunning surrounds. Honestly, it’s hard to find ugliness in the Algarve. You’ll see three Pousadas: Sagres located in the west, Sao Bras de Alportel situated in the center, and Tavira in the east. Most Pousadas once served as stately homes, monasteries or even convents. While lovely in accommodation, these give a higher value without sacrificing quality or service.

Try an Estalagem or inn. These places have 4-star and 5-star ratings with outstanding service levels. Estalagems are an excellent choice if you’re looking for a quiet place to lay your head each night. Another option is to choose Aparthotels. These are self-catering, meaning you must take care of yourself. Selecting a 4-star Aparthotel will result in a good experience, but if you go for a lower rating, the value might not be worth what you get.

Guesthouses, known as Albergaria, are another comfortable type of place to stay. Look for 4-stars for the rating and find one that speaks English unless you understand Portuguese. You can also choose resort villas, though those usually have shared facilities like swimming pools and fitness centers. If you’ve boarded your yacht charter to the Algarve with small children, it’s a good idea to find one of these places that has a highly-rated babysitting service. One downside though is that these types of places often have revelers well into the late hours of the night all the way through the wee hours of the morning, making it a fun yet much less quiet option.

Pensao are boarding houses. There are many options for them though that allow you to choose bed and breakfast or have all of your main meals included. They start at four stars and work their way down. The best choice is one that ranks in the 4-start realm, which will give you an affordable and comfortable place to stay on dry land.

Prefer more of an adventure? Camping has become quite popular. There are private as well as municipal sites. They’re a great value, and you can find them from Aljezur in the northwest to Vila Real sitting on the border with Spain. The facilities vary by park, but most are decent enough for a pleasurable stay.

If you can’t stay in one place for too long, when you dock your yacht charter you may just find that a Residencial is best for you. This single room, usually an en-suite bedroom, can provide breakfast if you wish. It’s decent, clean, and good if you’re moving around more.

Agroturismo is another rustic approach toward accommodations in the Algarve. Unlike camping though, it’s inland with farmhouses. While it affords you more comfort than roughing it in the wilds, it presents some stunning countryside views you won’t get by sea.

WINING AND DINING IN ALGARVE

Wining and Dining Algarve

While the Algarve is most noted for the sun-drenched beaches and sparkling waters, the food here is another thing that will make your sailing holiday even better. From Faro to Albufeira or any other resort, an array of scrumptious dishes and refreshing libations can be found anywhere. This guide of cuisine in the Algarve is sure to have you drooling before you step onto your yacht charter.

With so much coastline, it’s little surprise that seafood comprises most of the cuisine. You’ll never be far from the fresh catch of the day while you’re here. Stop in any traditional restaurant, and you’ll see a vast selection of fresh fish. Pratos, the name of the main course, can also be more than just seafood should you not be a fan of food that once swam. A favorite dish from the land is Chicken Piri Piri.

Other notables are as follows:

Feijoada

This classic stew is brimming with beans, sausage, and bacon.

Cataplana

This dish features an aromatic array of herbs surrounding clams and spicy sausage.

Ameijoas à Bulhao Pato

Clam lovers will love this simple yet favorite dish that features clams simmered in white wine with garlic and onions.

Bacalau

A must try, this staple of the Portuguese diet is dried, salted cod.

Caldeirada

Try this seafood stew everywhere you can. The ingredients vary on what is fresh and available.

While the main course is the focus, don’t forget about starting off deliciously.

Couvert is a favorite starter, featuring bread, sardine pate, olives, marinated carrots, and cheese. Soups like gazpacho and fish soup are also excellent options. Save room for desserts too. Sobremesas are delightful here, especially the Pudim Flan, like crème caramel. Pasties de Nata, a custard tart, as well as an almond tart, are all beautiful ways to finish a meal.

Don’t forget to try the Vinho, or wine, that comes from the rolling vineyards of Portugal. There are even some from the Algarve too, particularly from the Portimao area. However, you will be greatly missing out if you take your yacht charter to the Algarve and don’t try the drink this country is known for – port.

No matter where you anchor your yacht charter at the Algarve, delicious foods and refreshing drinks are waiting for you. Devour it all and savor the exquisite flavors of the cuisine in the Algarve, a prime sailing and dining destination.
