SAILING IN THE DODECANESE ISLANDS

DISCOVER THE STUNNING GREEK ISLAND CHAIN IN THE AEGEAN SEA

It’s named the Dodecanese for the 12 islands, which are called ‘dodeka’ in Greek, and it spans along Turkey’s east coast in the eastern Aegean, just 250 miles (400 km) from Athens. Rhodes Town, the capital, is UNESCO-listed and tops the tourist destination list for Greece. Encircled by a fortification system of monumental towers and gates constructed by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century, it is nothing short of impressive.

Take a yacht charter to the Dodecanese islands, and you’ll fall in love. Sail from Patmos in the north to Rhodes in the south for the ultimate experience with stunning scenery, architecture, and plenty of attractions to dazzle you. The landscape is unspoiled with pine forests in the north and palm trees in the south. The terrain varies as does the atmosphere where fields and hills thrive with aromatic herbs and plants, and unique animals dance about the plentiful bays and coves.

Some islands boast the classic white stucco architecture that Greece is known for while others bear more resemblance to Venetian and Turkish styles. You’ll find busy nightlife and shopping in some areas and secluded anchorages that will make you feel like you have your private beach on Symi or Kalymnos.

Close to the Turkish coasts on the northern side of the Dodecanese is Kalymnos. This is where you can find the sponge museum and go sponge diving. This ancient trade and activity are still very much alive today, something no yacht charter should miss out on. Pothia is the main town with a busy port, excellent tavernas, bars, cafes, and boats available to make excursions to the other islands. Beach resorts here are beautiful and relaxing, ideal for taking a break from the yacht charter on dry land. A day trip to the little island of Telendos may tickle your fancy and pique your curiosity within this nudist destination.

The tiny island of Halki resides close to Rhodes. It’s ideal for a peaceful and private escape while yachting. It is known for its traditional architecture and beaches perfect for relaxing. The only village and main port of Halki is Nimporio. There’s also an abandoned village that hosts a medieval castle on top. Halki is a superb day trip option from Rhodes if you’re so inclined.

Known as one of the most beautiful islands of the Dodecanese, Karpathos is on the southern side of the Aegean, just between Crete and Rhodes. It has a lengthy medieval history. The beaches are stunning, and tourists find the facilities here in good condition. You won’t have to rough it with your yacht charter here. Taking a holiday on this island is popular for families or those that love trekking. The paths you can take will lead you to some amazingly breathtaking spots.

Another mostly unspoiled island in the group is Kassos. It features strong traditions and homes with that old-world charm that still cling to their authentic roots. The beaches are pristine, and residents are kind and friendly. Often, they’ll recite limericks they compose on the spot, making it easy to see why Kassos is such a beautiful place to go on your yacht charter to get away from it all.

Then there’s Kastelorizo, just 800 meters off the Turkish coast, yet everything that Greece stands for. The film Mediterraneao from 1991 was shot here, which put the island on the map, so to speak.
